Georgetown
I took photographs in Georgetown. The day I went was rainy and gloomy, making the environment feel more real. The area is a mix of tourists, students, and DC natives. The culture and community feel special and deep here. The area is so historic going back to the colonial area; it is so powerful in US history. In the hours I spent walking around I heard various languages spoken by the people around. I heard a large amount of French speakers which was interesting to me. I wanted to depict the reality of the area in combination with the romanticization. The people linger and shop or they move with a serious purpose heading to class, work, or home. My second, fourth, fifth, eighth, and tenth images are the most representative of the essence I wanted to capture here. The second image is so powerful to me. I used the rule of thirds to help capture the emotion of the location. The minimal landscape allows the buildings and the woman to stand out. The simple colors create a melancholy mood which inspires an idea of her experience and what brought her to sit by the water. The fourth photo is of a student. I'd never met her but our interaction was valuable and positive. I captured an average moment in her life using light and depth of field to depict a mundane- but not negative emotion. Georgetown is beautiful and special but it's also a reality which is what I worked to show. The fifth and eighth pictures show normalcy but images like the first and ninth show the romantic beauty of Georgetown. Images six, seven, thirteen, and twenty-three use lines to guide the eye and show movement.
